Baccarat: Rules, Gameplay and Bet Types

Baccarat (also known as Punto Banco) looks mysterious from the outside — elegant setting, almost ceremonial gameplay, often associated with high stakes. In reality, it belongs to the simplest card games out there: you make no decisions, you simply bet on which of two hands will win. This page explains the rules and the major bets. Up front: Wunderino in Germany offers virtual slot machine games exclusively. Baccarat is part of this informational knowledge page and not part of our German game offering.

The basic principle

In baccarat, two hands compete: Player and Banker. Your job as the bettor isn't to play a hand yourself, but to bet on which of the two will win. You have three main options:

  • Bet on Player – wins when the Player hand is closer to 9
  • Bet on Banker – wins when the Banker hand is closer to 9
  • Bet on Tie – wins when both hands have the same value

Note: you don't bet "on yourself" as Player — both hands are played by the dealer by fixed rules. There are no player decisions other than the bet itself.

Card values

Card Value
Ace 1
2 through 9 Face value
10, J, Q, K 0

The hand value is the sum modulo 10 — meaning only the last digit counts. Example: 7 + 8 = 15 → hand value is 5. 9 + 7 = 16 → hand value is 6.

So the highest hand is 9, the lowest 0 (Baccarat).

How a hand plays out

  1. Place your bet. You bet on Player, Banker or Tie.
  2. Cards are dealt. The dealer gives two cards to Player and two to Banker.
  3. Check for "Natural." If either side has 8 or 9 on the first two cards (called "Natural"), the hand ends — the higher hand wins.
  4. Third card (by fixed rules). If neither hand is a Natural, a fixed rule scheme decides whether Player or Banker gets a third card. You don't need to memorize these — the dealer applies them automatically. Importantly: no player decision is involved.
  5. Compare hands. The hand closer to 9 wins.
  6. Payout.

Payouts and house edge

Bet Payout House Edge
Banker 1:1 (minus 5% commission) approx. 1.06%
Player 1:1 approx. 1.24%
Tie 8:1 (sometimes 9:1) approx. 14.4% (at 8:1)

Notable: despite the 5% commission, betting on Banker has the lowest house edge — one of the lowest figures in classic gambling. The Tie bet looks attractive thanks to its high payout, but it's mathematically by far the worst pick.

Myths about baccarat

"Banker wins more often, so always bet Banker." Partly true. Banker wins statistically slightly more than Player (approx. 45.9% vs 44.6%, with 9.5% Tie). That's why the 5% commission exists — to offset the statistical edge. Banker remains the mathematically best main bet, but not by magic; it's because of the more favourable third-card rules.

"There are 'hot' streaks you should follow." False. Every coup is independent. Card tracking ("roadmaps") in many online baccarat tables creates the feeling of seeing patterns — mathematically, it's not an exploitable signal.

"System bets guarantee wins at baccarat." False. As with roulette, doubling and escalation systems on long play inevitably hit table limits or budget walls.

What Wunderino offers

Wunderino is licensed in Germany to offer virtual slot machine games (GGL licence number 208.1.1-12254). Baccarat doesn't fall under this licence category and is therefore not part of our offering.

If what appeals to you about baccarat is the simple, calm playing principle — no complicated strategy, no decision burden — classic slots or steady-tempo video slots might give you a similar feel. An overview lives in the Slots Guide and the Slot Machine Types section.

Common questions about baccarat

What does "Punto Banco" mean?
Punto Banco is the most common baccarat variant in Europe, Latin America and at many online operators. "Punto" stands for Player, "Banco" for Banker. The variant has fixed third-card rules and no player decisions.

Why does the house take 5% commission on Banker wins?
Because Banker statistically wins more often. The commission offsets the statistical edge so the bet stays economical for the operator. Despite the commission, Banker remains the mathematically best main bet.

Which bet is the best at baccarat?
Banker (house edge approx. 1.06%), followed by Player (approx. 1.24%). The Tie bet is mathematically the worst.

Why can't I make decisions during a baccarat hand?
Because the game is designed that way. Both hands play by fixed rules — including the decision on whether a third card is drawn. Your only decision lies in the initial bet.

Does Wunderino offer baccarat?
No. Our German licence covers only virtual slot machine games.

Play responsibly

Baccarat has a low house edge — that makes it a statistically fair game, but doesn't change the fact that it's gambling. Set a budget before you play. Wunderino offers limits in your account under Play Safe. If your gambling is starting to worry you, free counselling is available through buwei.de.
